Evil: An Important Question

evil man
Where does evil come from?

Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; or he can, but does not want to. If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked. If God can abolish evil, and God really wants to do it, why is there evil in the world? – Epicurus, as quoted in 2000 Years of Disbelief

Augustine stated that natural evil (evil present in the natural world such as natural disasters etc.) is caused by fallen angels, whereas moral evil (evil caused by the will of human beings) is as a result of man having become estranged from God and choosing to deviate from his chosen path. Augustine argued that God could not have created evil in the world, as it was created good, and that all notions of evil are simply a deviation or privation of goodness. Evil cannot be a separate and unique substance. For example, Blindness is not a separate entity, but is merely a lack or privation of sight. Thus the Augustinian theodicist would argue that the problem of evil and suffering is void because God did not create evil; it was man who chose to deviate from the path of perfect goodness.

Both Luther and Calvin explained evil as a consequence of the fall of man and the original sin. However, due to the belief in predestination and omnipotence, the fall is part of God's plan. Ultimately humans may not be able to understand and explain this plan.

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

Augustine's principle makes sense, and it is a answer but I don't believe that it is the most compelling answer. God didn't create evil, he allows it. As a loving and just God I believe he would love to wipe it out, but chooses not to because it gives him pleasure to allow it. Think about it. God's whole purpose for creating us was to bring him glory and pleasure. If we couldn't choose evil, then we would have to love him. If you program a robot to hug you, you don't feel loved because it can't do anything else. So, the way I see it God allowing evil is good in two ways. First, He wouldn't feel loved, honored, or glorified by us if we didn't have the ability to choose against him. Secondly, allowing evil is loving to us. If God created us to bring honor to him, and his not allowing evil caused us not to fulfill that purpose, then we would be constantly unhappy because the God we were trying to please was unhappy. That might not make sense to anyone else, but it does to me.

That is such an answer you would have Caleb and very nice robot example. I think that i understand what you mean here but im not sure i totaly agree with all of it and thats ok. Earlier this year we were talking about this topic in class and a great example used that i really liked was that a picture isn't as beautiful without the contrast of black and white. That sort of goes with what you said

I would use that same example about the black and white painting. Caleb, i also loved your example about the robot. why would God want us to br programmed to love Him? That's not real love from Him. Now we have evil and free will.

that sounds like the yin yang creepy stuff
Caleb I have something to add to your comment about how God wants to wipe out evil. I think he has'nt wiped out evil because we are evil, and if we are evil then he would have to wipe out us, and like you said God loves us and it pleases him when we glorify him.
So wiping us out would not please him.
if God wanted to wipe out evil he would have done it a long time ago... since we are evil we would have bee destroyed a long time ago.. but thats the thing we are wiped out, we die!!! if we all die then the punishment is given.. remember that we were made to live forever in the garden of Eden.. when we sinned we learned good and evil... so we are evil as well that is why we die!

"The wages of sin is death." It is not God wiping out evil that makes us die, it's our natural punishment for our sin

Earlier in this text it said that natural disasters were caused by fallen angels. I had always been taught that God controlled the fallen angels the story of Job is the story that my sunday school teacher used to teach me that. So if God has power over the fallen angels and I think He does then God is still allowing the natural disasters. I have struggled with the evil and where it comes from topic for quite awhile at first i was convinced that God had nothing to do with evil because God is so peaceful and loving which He is but thats not all He is.Then I started to think about why God doesn't eliminate evil since He is so powerful, then I would get on the free will topic with the thought that man chooses evil. Ultimately we cant ever fully comprehend God and why He does some things the way He does and this is one of those topics but it makes me think about who God is so its great to discuss.

natural disasters could also be caused by good angels. Many things that seem evil can really be ordered by God. Like the angel who killed a whole army in one night
Well I know the first thing I'm asking God when I finally get up there. All I know is that God is perfectly good and that he created me and sent His son to die for me and that I am a sinner saved by Him.

Evil, evil, evil, not an easy subject. To be honest, I have no clue where it comes from. I'm also not going to fret over it. I do not think God created evil at all! Yes He allows it but just because He loves us. To my own understandings, evil was formed somehow, when the angels rebelled. Thats all I really kow about it.

umm well i think that evil is the opposite of good so if God is good then the opposite is evil.

Are you saying there is no evil, just an abscence of good? Like there is no substance of dark or cold, simply the abscence of light and heat?
