Faster than light particles found, claim scientists

Ian Sample,  Guardian, September 23, 2011

"It is a concept that forms a cornerstone of our understanding of the universe and the concept of time – nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. But now it seems that researchers working in one of the world’s largest physics laboratories, under a mountain in central Italy, have recorded particles travelling at a speed that is supposedly forbidden by Einstein’s theory of special relativity.

Scientists at the Gran Sasso facility will unveil evidence on Friday that raises the troubling possibility of a way to send information back in time, blurring the line between past and present and wreaking havoc with the fundamental principle of cause and effect.

They will announce the result at a special seminar at Cern – the European particle physics laboratory – timed to coincide with the publication of a research paper (pdf) describing the experiment."

What does the Bible teach about going back in time or traveling faster than light? Do you think this paper is valid science?  Did they follow the scientific method?  How could this research be used to glorify God?  Who paid for this research and did that have an influence on how the results were reported?

It may be a while before you understand the details of their report, but some Christians need to understand these physics details in order to help show how the results bring glory to God and support Biblical creation.

Okay, I’m sure that we have all heard of the story of Elijah and the fire from heaven… but how many of us have finished reading that chapter of 1 Kings? 1 Kings 18 ends really interestingly. It talks about Elijah warning Ahab about a heavy rain, and Elijah sent his servant to tell him to hitch his chariot and ride to Jezreel. Elijah then had an idea; 1 Kings 18:46 “The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.”
Okay, this doesn’t make sense, he outran a chariot. The horses used in that time period, and region were mainly Arabians, which can run 35 miles per hour! Another fact is that the fastest recorded speed of a human is 27.79 miles per hour… for a 100 meter sprint. Okay, let’s do that math really quick… that’s the Arabian in the lead by 7.03 mph, for 100 meters, then humans really start to get slower.
Okay, let’s take the record marathon runner, and compare him to the record speed of a distance race for an Arabian. Marathons are 26 miles, and the record is held at 2:27:21, this would be an average speed of 5.6 mph. The record distance run of an Arabian, is much farther, 100 miles in 8 hours 58 minutes, which comes to an average speed of 5.4 miles per hour, this isn’t much of a difference is speed, but the Arabian had run almost four times as far.
Well… just remember, Ahab had a head start as well, and that would make it so that Elijah would have had to go nearly twice as fast as the record speed.

And no, I am not suddenly obsessed with equine... This just happened to be what I chose to write about.
