Aquaponic Gardening Book - Student Essays

This book by Sylvia Bernstein, that we use for the aquaponics class, is very helpful on the practical aspects of aquaponics. This blog post was created to provide a place for students in the aquaponics class to post their chapter review essays. One review is required for each chapter. Posts can begin with the current chapter assigned. Aim for 250 words and capture ideas that you found interesting and note any ideas that may be helpful to one of the systems that we are now operating.

Chapter 7: I thought her information on the grow beds ratios and fish tanks was exactly what I needed to get the numbers straight in my head for my system. All the instructions were straightforward and easy to follow.. I really liked the pocket towers on page 88. They seem like great space savers. The pic on page 74 was helpful also. I'm just finishing my small indoor system's hardware so all this comes at a great time. Still have to buy the pump, pvc pipe and blockhead fittings for the ebb and flow system. My grow-beds are made of the 55-gallon barrels that are on page 79. I'm going to have this system in my basement, the main purpose of it is to grow the bacteria that my outdoor system will need early so I can get a jump on the shorter growing season around here. Dr. Bartlett do you recommend that I buy the fish for my outdoor system this season or should I just run the system dry using ammonia for the first year?

John, Would be good to figure your source of fish and check on permits for stocking fish in your state anytime. You can put fish in the system most anytime after some water testing and management phosphate etc.  Keep in mind that the fish ratio needs to match your plant draw to some extent.
